Beginning in 2016, BGSU started using machine learning to build predictive models in R for first year cohort retention. The models began with limited information using data from the Student Information System (SIS). As word of the modeling started to spread, more units wanted to have their data included in the modeling. This allowed our small team to work with the units to improve data collection techniques across campus and willingly share data with us. This work helped build data consistency, data literacy, and data democratization across campus. By adding a Power BI report that allowed multiple filtering, units were able to focus in on designing initiatives targeting specific student populations.

Intended Audience:  Intermediate to Advanced

Presenter: Kim Brooks, BGSU
