About the Opportunity:

The Data Administration team (DA), as a part of University Decision Support (UDS), manages institutional data in the Northeastern reporting environment and provides reliable, accurate, secure and accessible data to meet strategic needs at all levels of the campus. "Institutional data" is data relevant to the planning, managing, operating, and auditing of University academic and administrative activities, in particular the data available from the University's Operational Data Store (ODS) and the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). Broad responsibilities of the Senior Data Administration Analyst (SDAA) include but are not limited to participation in data governance initiatives via established ongoing and newly developed data governance forums, documenting data policies/guidelines and data definitions, facilitating data access and use activities, providing user training, and monitoring data quality.

The SDAA will be a dedicated member of the University Decision Support (UDS) team responsible for ensuring management and maintenance of the University’s current ODS reporting environment as well as supporting ongoing growth and development of the new business intelligence Enterprise Data Warehouse(EDW). The position performs a variety of training and documentation functions which require considerable business/administrative experience with multiple tools and sufficient technical/analytical expertise in a complex organizational environment.

Under the guidance of the Senior Director of Data Administration (SDDA) and the leadership of the Associate Vice Provost of UDS, the candidate will work closely with business partners, including colleges and non-academic business units, to manage current ODS reporting environment, maintain existing and develop new critical functionality in the Argos reporting tool. The SDAA will also provide similar support to the Cognos reporting environment. The SDAA will monitor data quality in the ODS and EDW reporting environments through audits and provide/improve data definitions to support use’s’ reporting abilities.

Responsibilities:

The main areas of expertise for this position are user reporting community support through user training, clear and concise documentation, data issues resolution, SQL query and report writing/support, and data quality support. The SDAA will also maintain and enhance the Data Administration Office’s main SharePoint site including maintaining all pages, forms and workflows, promoting Argos/Cognos trainings and updates, and preserving documentation from all data governance initiatives.

The candidate will be expected to develop a solid foundational understanding of critical business practices used by the functional business units within the University to develop key reporting solutions. The SDAA will work closely with Data Custodians, Institutional Research team members, Business Intelligence and Analytics staff, other ITS resources, and Data Administration staff in all phases of implementing reporting solutions and new technical development.

Additionally, the SDAA will act as a liaison between the University reporting community, UDS, and the ITS team, remaining closely involved with all aspects of the University’s reporting functions. The SDAA will serve as the key person responsible for Argos development and training as well as supporting the DA BI Analyst (SDAA-BI) with Cognos training and data definitions. The SDAA facilitates the process for requesting access to the ODS and Argos reporting environment and works closely with IT Security to monitor access to Argos and ODS. The SDAA also works closely with the ITS Argos support team on planning and scheduling Argos upgrades and new functionality rollouts.

This role will support SDDA and Assistant Director of Data Administration (ADDA) in activities related to the rollout of the Data Classification Program.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/MIS related field and 3-5 years of equivalent work experience is desired with experience designing, implementing, and delivering user documentation and training;

• Needs to demonstrate skills in planning and delivering training, and planning and executing documentation projects. Skills in technical writing are helpful;

• Must understand data warehouse best practices and methodologies and experience with design and creation of operational and analytical reports for end users is a plus;

• Understanding of effective report/dashboard design and standards is required as well as an ability to use Microsoft Office tools such as PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Access and Visio and specific experience with reporting tools like Argos, Cognos, Toad, Brio;

• Must have technical skills and the ability to learn and apply new technologies (e.g. Knowledge of SharePoint and K-2 is desired);

• Experience in a higher education environment with functional knowledge and exposure to Banner subject area usage (Student, Finance, HR, and Advancement) preferred;

• Must be able to communicate effectively with clients, staff, and partners. Requires both oral and written communication capabilities. Also, is timely in responding to customers/clients and works to address client requests effectively and quickly;

• Self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision; possess maturity in judgment, resourcefulness, creativity, and ability to get along with widely diverse personalities; able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and integrity; capable of prioritizing and planning complex work in a decentralized environment.

• Demonstrated ability to interface with all levels within the organization, run small group meetings, and facilitate team discussions.

• Ability to solve problems and facilitate solutions with limited direction;

• Must have a process-oriented approach to projects and tasks and complete tasks in a consistent, reliable, repeatable manner;

• Excellent time, project management and organizational skills. Ability to prioritize work and excellent follow-through coupled with initiative and strong teamwork capabilities.
