Job Details

This position will help manage and utilize complex datasets combined with existing data stored in the USM warehouse to model data and create visualizations that will be used in institutional research presentations, briefs, and reports for the consumption of various USM constituencies (the USM Board of Regents and leadership, the USM campuses and regional centers, and state agencies). 

Other responsibilities for this position include (but are not limited to) the following: contribute data-informed narratives, visualizations, and analyses for reports required by internal and external constituencies; identify new data sources; work with IT Development to establish new data streams and update existing data; retrieve data from USM’s data warehouse;  develop robust data analytical models that answer timely inquiries based on data within Institutional Research Information System (IRIS) and beyond; present data insights to a non-technical audience; develop predictive analytics in areas related to student enrollment and persistence, degree completion, workforce preparation, and other higher education academic and administrative areas; assist in the maintenance and integrity assurance of all data and visualizations on the USM IRIS Website (www.usmd.edu/IRIS); and other duties as assigned.

The qualified candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, economics, statistics, the social sciences or another quantitatively-oriented discipline or field. Other qualifications include: knowledge of statistical analysis and experience with relational databases; knowledge and interest in providing support for emerging data storage and analytics platforms (e.g., IBM Cloud); knowledge and experience with data mining and developing predictive analytical models; ability to conduct empirical research and answer complex questions using data mining or data modeling techniques (e.g., traditional statistical model development and machine learning); ability to independently identify and solve problems, primarily through statistical programming and analysis; ability to analyze complex topics, problem solve, synthesize, and communicate the results clearly both orally and in writing to faculty, staff and students within the USM and its stakeholders; excellent communication skills and willingness to work collaboratively in a team environment; and a curious, creative, and flexible approach to analysis that allows for results at varying levels of precision.

The preferred candidate will possess an advanced degree in data science, computer science, economics, statistics, the social sciences or another quantitatively-oriented discipline or field; familiarity with the core operations of an institutional research (IR) office (experience at a university or university system); software programming experience (SAS, R, SPSS, Python, and/or SQL) and the interest in and aptitude for learning open source languages (R, Python, and SQL).
