Brief Description
The Director of Institutional Research leads and manages institutional research and analysis for The George Washington University in order to support Academic Affairs and other university divisions. In addition to being responsible for the official reporting of all non-financial statistics, the director works with others on campus to advance data-driven decision-making. The director is part of a team of exceptional leaders under the Office of Academic Planning and Assessment (APA). The team includes the director of Office of Survey Research and Analysis and the Director of Institutional Analysis. The APA is also responsible for leading assessment of student learning, Middle States accreditation, and Academic Program review. It edits and publishes the university bulletin.
The ideal candidate will have creative problem-solving skills, be forward thinking, and proactive. They should be able to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously. They should have the ability to work collaboratively with people from different backgrounds and with those who may have different perspectives.

The Director will be responsible for leading and supervising staff, reviewing their work, and collaborating with the Director of Analytics to prioritize staff assignments. Additionally, the Director will assist in making hiring decisions, provide coaching to team members, and manage staff performance.

Key Responsibilities:
Data Management and Data Governance:
  • Ensure data integrity and develop internal processes to facilitate accurate reporting and compliance with external standards and institutional policies. Work closely with the data governance team to collaborate on issues regarding data definitions for reporting.
  • Manage databases used for reporting and ensure the office follows ethical data storage practices.
Business Intelligence and Internal Reporting:
  • Partner with the director of analytics, university’s business intelligence team and others to build and support the university’s business intelligence system. Work with partners in enrollment management, the registrar’s office and the schools/colleges to enhance the university’s capacity to leverage data to inform strategic initiatives and institutional effectiveness.
  • Produce a University Factbook dashboard, updated several times a year, which provides information about enrollment, retention, and graduation rates, faculty and staff statistics, etc.
  • Take initiative to find effective ways for sharing official statistics and data with the university community.
  • Support the Academic Program Review by providing units with information required for the review process.
  • Fulfill data requests from the university, especially key constituents such as the Provost’s Office and the Faculty Senate.
External Reporting:
  • Completes federal and state surveys (IPEDS, SCHEV), reports for accreditation agencies (Middle States, American Bar Association, NCAA), publications (US News best college and program rankings, Common Data Set, American Association of University Professors).
  • Responsible for keeping up-to-date on the latest external reporting requirements, educating academic affairs about changes, and ensuring that the university is compliant with the latest reporting expectations.
  • Assist with the data requests from external partners such as AAUDE and Academic Analytics, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
  • Support the work of data collection and data support for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education self-study or other major accreditation initiatives.
Collaboration & Communication:
  • Foster a culture of data-informed decision-making across the institution through training and support for faculty and staff.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Survey Research to integrate findings from surveys into institutional assessments and improvement efforts
  • Collaborate with the Director of Analytics to coordinate responses to information requests.
Management & Professionalism
  • Collaborate with the director of analytics and the director of survey research to ensure a coordinated approach to advancing the goals of the APA, including the mission to advance institutional effectiveness. As a member of the leadership team, help to prioritize projects and coordinate the work of staff.
  • Partner with the director of analytics to manage and oversee the work of the Institutional Research and Planning research analysts and graduate assistants. Lead and supervise staff directly, review staff work, make hiring decisions, provide coaching, training and mentoring, manage performance and determine future staffing needs.
  • Demonstrate excellence in project management. Maintain a reporting calendar and meet all official reporting requirements by the deadlines. Prioritize internal data requests and develop strategies for meeting such requests.
  • Develop strong working relationships with other units including, but not limited to, Budget Office, Human Resources, Enrollment Management, Provost, Registrar, academic dean offices, and Business Intelligence.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the field of institutional research.
