Position Summary

The Enterprise Business Analyst will be primarily responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining SQL databases and SSRS reports that power the University’s various academic and administrative data needs. This position reports directly to the Director of Enterprise Applications and Data Services.

This position is vital in ensuring the integrity, security, and accessibility of the University’s institutional data assets, providing information to aid data-informed decision-making across all facets of the university operations. The incumbent’s efforts will foster a seamless, efficient, and secure data environment supporting the University’s commitment to educational excellence. Moreover, this position will assist the University in solving complex data challenges while upholding the Catholic principles of human dignity, ethical conduct, and the responsible stewardship of resources.

Essential Functions:
 
Job duties that must be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, and may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics.  This position description is illustrative and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents in this position.
  • Design efficient relational databases, SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and other database objects to manage and extract data from the University’s mission-critical systems, including student information systems, learning management systems, and other vital applications.
  • Develop SSRS reports that support data-driven decision-making.
  • Architect and implement comprehensive data warehousing and ETL solutions to integrate, consolidate, and transform data from the University’s disparate source systems.
  • Ensure data integrity and consistency for enterprise reporting, analytics, and business intelligence initiatives. 
  • Collaborate closely with academic departments, administrative units, and cross-functional team stakeholders to understand their data requirements.
  • Work with domain administrators, users, and managers to analyze existing University trends, develop dashboards and metrics, and manage operations.
  • Advance and enforce robust data security protocols, access controls, encryption mechanisms, and auditing procedures to safeguard sensitive student records, financial data, research data, and other confidential institutional information in compliance with FERPA and other relevant regulations.
  • Produce and maintain technical documentation, including data dictionaries and technical specifications, to promote transparency and the dissemination of information.
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, and attending professional development courses and/or conferences.
  • Provide scheduled and ad hoc mentoring and professional development to team members.
  • Report project statuses and issues to the Director of Enterprise Applications and Data Services in a timely manner.

Education & Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related technical field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of 2 years of proven experience in SQL development, database design, and database administration.
  • Experience with Colleague a plus.
  • Experience with ETL processes, data warehousing architectures, and business intelligence tools commonly deployed in universities and academic settings.
  • Experience in SQL, with knowledge of SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, or another widely-used RDBMS prevalent in higher education environments.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  
Knowledge of and ability to follow university policies and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the campus community. 
  • Ability to think creatively to develop solutions to data access, dashboards, and reports.
  • A systematic and thoughtful approach to programming, reporting, and documentation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage databases with an emphasis on data integrity, quality, and efficient processes and mechanisms to store and retrieve data.
  • Experience creating end user reports and data ETL query tools 
  • Experience using Active Directory 
  • Experience with PowerShell scripting language or similar scripting tools 
  • Experience with programmatic (e.g., SQL, SSIS, Python) approaches to manipulating large datasets.
  • Experience database analytics design and development using SSAS/Power BI
  • Experience with API calls - GET and POST data from other applications
  • Knowledge of higher education data management practices and regulations (e.g., FERPA)
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow university policies and procedures
Work Environment: 
Operates in an office environment, that may have frequent interruptions. The area is well-lit, temperature controlled and free from hazards. Noise level is generally quiet to moderate.
 
Physical Requirements:
 
Communicates frequently, in person, over the phone, or via a computer.  Hearing is needed for extensive telephone and in person communication. Regularly required to sit for long periods of time; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms. Manual dexterity is needed in order to operate a computer keyboard. Operates standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
