Brief Description
Mount Wachusett Community College is looking for a person to teach a Data Ethics course. Position is adjunct faculty. Course Description is: Students will learn about the five principles of data ethics: ownership, transparency, privacy, intention, and outcomes as well as the data ethics tenets set by the Federal Data Strategy Team. Students will focus on ethical standards and practices specifically related to collecting, using, and selling data, security, privacy, policy, advocacy, and legal requirements. Additionally, students will review case studies; identify the importance of working with domain experts; compare strategies such as Data Feminism with traditional approaches; learn how discrimination impacts data and society; utilize visualizations; and complete writing assignments.

Mount Wachusett Community College is looking for a person to teach a Data Ethics course. Position is as an adjunct faculty. Can be taught as an online/remote course. 

Student Learning Outcomes
Students will:
• Describe five principles of data ethics: ownership, transparency, privacy, intention, and outcomes
• Review and discuss the data ethics tenets set by the Federal Data Strategy Team
• Define classical ethical theories and Data Analytics
• Review case studies and assess best practices related to examples of collecting, using, and selling data • Identify risks related to security, privacy, policy, advocacy, and legal requirements
• Discuss privacy and shared responsibility
• Identify the importance of working with domain experts
• Identify value-laden biases and discrimination in Data Analytics
• Create visualizations that illustrate concepts related to fairness and identify mistakes
• Construct peer review exercises to review outcomes and measure accuracy
• Test accountability for AI and synthetic data for AI
• Compare strategies such as Data Feminism with traditional approaches
• Describe how discrimination impacts data and society
 
The goal of learning through inquiry, exploration and collaborative work is to increase problem solving, reasoning, analysis, critical thinking, and teamwork skills – all critical to becoming independent users of information technology.

Applications for adjunct positions will be held in applicant pools by discipline which, whenever a position opens up in any given discipline, will be consulted when searching for candidates to fill the position. Applicants for adjunct positions will not be notified of their status unless they are contacted to come in for an interview, which might occur soon after applying or as much as a year later. Adjunct applicants are encouraged to indicate their availability by completing the Adjunct Faculty Questionnaire.

Responsibilities

  • Instruction in both traditional and non-traditional learning modes; Instructional preparation;
  • Assessment of student performance; including submission of final grades in a timely fashion; 
  • An obligation on the part of the unit member to be available to students by appointment when mutually convenient; 
  • Not more than one faculty meeting per session. 
  • Other duties as required.

Requirements:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Masters degree with a major in course content area;
  • Evidence of competence in the area of instruction;
  • Maintain expertise appropriate to teaching responsibilities.

Desired Qualifications

  • 3-5 years teaching experience in a community college
