The IR Analyst will participate in the development, communication, and training in the use of new data analytics products. This position supports needs for VP Admin and associated areas will necessarily integrate student, HR, finance, and other data as appropriate. The successful candidate will have exceptional writing and content creation skills. Develop analytics resources using Tableau to deliver research and information products to intended constituencies, with appropriate clarity documentation and replicability. Analyze and interpret data, including data cleaning, weighting, statistical analysis using a broad range of techniques, and developing appropriate visualizations, tables, and text for communication. Gather and integrate data, including extraction from PeopleSoft and Data Warehouse using SQL, collation from other sources as using appropriate methods. Understand university data sources, including correct identification of appropriate tables and fields to respond to data requests. Describe appropriate uses for reported data and limitations of data sources on reports. Participate in university committees and groups to support institutional and office mission Document and train university users on analytics and data tools. Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Reporting to the Associate Vice President, the Institutional Research Analyst will gather, extract, analyze and report data to support analysis of Stony Brook University's effectiveness at the institutional and programmatic levels. This position will be the principal analyst in the Office of Institutional Research, Planning & Effectiveness for collecting, reporting, analyzing and forecasting data about employees.

Activities include extracting data from the University PeopleSoft system, Interfolio, the data warehouse, other university systems, and external databases to prepare statistical reports and respond to internal and external data requests. The position will consult closely with staff in the University Division of Human Resources and human resource functions in other areas including the Provost's Office, the Health Science Center and the health system. In conjunction with analytics and reporting staff, the position will ensure that the university community has ready access to accurate statistics about faculty and staff employed by the University. Incumbent must have strong written and verbal communication skills and the capacity to interact professionally with a diverse group of higher education administrators. Excellent organizational skills and experience handling multiple initiatives simultaneously is essential.

  • Prepare curated data sets about employees for reporting, including error-checks and coordination of remediation processes.
  • Prepare statistical reports about employees, including publication of the university fact book, and work with the analytics team to ensure statistics in the analytics system are valid and reliable.
  • Communicate with Human Resources, Human Resource specialists in functional areas, and other data professionals about processes, data collections, the meaning of data, and appropriate analytical approaches.
  • Report statistical data for the IPEDS Human Resources Survey, Common Data Set, international ranking surveys, SUNY, the NY Dept of Labor, and other external surveys that require statistics about employees.
  • Coordinate with other analysts to link employee data to student data, finance data and other sources to create metrics (i.e. student-faculty ratio, sections per faculty members, etc.).
  • Serve as the principal analyst in IRPE for Academic Analytics, including preparation of the Academic Analytics faculty submission list, maintenance of local data sets of Academic Analytics data, and analysis of Academic Analytics data to support.
  • Develop data sets about student workers, graduate assistants, postdoctoral associates and affiliates.
  • Support initiatives to develop, test, and disseminate tools for faculty activity reporting (instruction, research, service, administration and clinical activity).
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of experience in institutional research or closely related functions, including production and presentation of descriptive statistics. Three (3) years of professional experience in higher education, industry or a non-profit to include one (1) year in an analytical role. Experience with data extraction, data visualization, and/or data analysis. Experience working with databases, MS Office, visualization software and/or basic SQL. 

Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Experience in and contributions to institutional research and/or higher education professional organizations. Experience with Stony Brook University organization, structure, and priorities. Experience with IPEDS reporting. Experience with Academic Analytics. Experience with educational benchmarking.


Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
