Event Description
This is a hands-on workshop for institutional research professionals interested in using generative AI to support qualitative analysis. Participants will learn a reusable prompting framework for turning messy text into structured, reviewable insights while maintaining appropriate human judgment, validation, and caution.

The session will focus on common institutional research contexts, such as open-ended survey responses, “other/specify” survey fields, and rapid synthesis of participant input during workshops or presentations. Participants will compare weak and stronger prompts, examine how prompt design affects AI outputs, and practice adapting prompts for different analytic goals.

This workshop is model-agnostic: participants may use the AI tool available to them, including institutionally approved tools, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or another large language model. Sample data will be provided, and participants who are authorized to use their own de-identified or institutionally approved data may bring a small dataset from their work. The emphasis will be on practical use, critical review, and responsible application rather than on mastering a single platform.

Participants in this session will
  • identify institutional research contexts in which generative AI may be useful for qualitative analysis, such as open-ended survey responses, “other/specify” fields, feedback activities, or other short-form text data;
  • be able to apply a reusable prompting framework that specifies context, task, analytic lenses, desired output, and review criteria when using AI to analyze qualitative text; and
  • be able to identify how prompt design may affect the usefulness, specificity, and reliability of AI-generated outputs.
Intended Audience: Open to all institutional research, assessment, planning, analytics, and related higher education professionals who work with qualitative or open-ended text data.

Format:  This is an Interactive Workshop: Participants will be able to interact with presenter and one another; these are not recorded.

Cost:  $40 Member; $100 Non-Member

Presenter: Malek Kaloti, Harvard University
